Best Honeymoon Destinations for LGBTQ Couples

When it comes to planning an unforgettable honeymoon, there are many places in the world to choose from. However, when you’re part of the LGBTQ community, that choice can be tricky when it comes to finding a welcoming destination for you and your love. But fear not, more and more countries are becoming safe havens for LGBTQ couples to explore, indulge, and enjoy their honeymoon. In this blog we will showcase some of the best honeymoon destinations for LGBTQ couples and what destinations you may want to stay away from.

Best Honeymoon Destinations for LGBTQ Couples

Below are some of our top picks for the best honeymoon destinations for LGBTQ couples. These locations are where you can explore and start your new life together without stress, worry, or discrimination.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica boasts breathtaking natural beauty, with its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and abundance of wildlife. This destination has become increasingly popular amongst LGBTQ couples looking for a romantic and an adventurous getaway. Additionally, Costa Rica legalized same-sex marriage in 2020, making it one of the few countries in Central America to do so. With its welcoming locals and vibrant culture, along with plenty of adventure and exciting activities, Costa Rica is on the top of our list for one of the best honeymoon destinations for LGBTQ couples.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Netherlands has welcomed all sexual orientations and gender identities for a long time, and because of that it has remained at the top as one of the best honeymoon destinations for LGBTQ couples. Home to the world’s first-ever same-sex marriage in 2001, the city is perfect for newlyweds who want a romantic, peaceful, and historic experience. Enjoy beautiful canals, bike rides, picturesque parks, and vibrant nightlife with your partner in one of Europe’s most LGBTQ friendly cities.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is recognized as one of the safest countries for LGBTQ travelers in the world and Reykjavik is home to one of the best Pride parades in Europe. Nestled in the midst of glaciers, hot springs, and geysers, Reykjavik is perfect for couples who love nature and are looking for a unique and adventurous honeymoon. If a tropical beach vacation isn’t what you’re dreaming of, and you don’t mind colder weather, this is an excellent destination to consider.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is very popular for all types of travelers, but it’s no secret that it’s also a hotspot for LGBTQ couples. Home to plenty of LGBTQ friendly bars, restaurants, and hotels, Puerto Vallarta boasts stunning beaches, hidden coves, and picturesque sunsets that are perfect for romance. The city also has a thriving LGBT community which prides itself on its open-mindedness and acceptance. Additionally, there are countless activities available around the area – from scuba diving and whale watching to secluded beaches and delicious cuisine. Puerto Vallarta is definitely a top destination for an unforgettable honeymoon experience.

Hawaii

Hawaii is a magnificent honeymoon destination for LGBTQ couples because of its vibrant and inclusive culture. Hawaii also became the first state in the US to legalize same-sex marriage in 2013. Hawaii’s “Aloha Spirit,” which is a local philosophy of hospitality and kindness, plays a crucial role in making visitors feel welcome and embraced in its open and accepting society.

Hawaii’s diverse community, from its Polynesian history to its contemporary culture, is a standout feature that adds to the beauty of any honeymoon experience. No matter if you want to explore volcanos, lush rainforests or lounge on beautiful beaches, Hawaii’s unique and invigorating environment will no doubt make your honeymoon something to remember.

Places for LGBTQ Couples to Avoid

The unfortunate thing to also remember when planning your honeymoon is that there are still places where LGBTQ couples are not welcomed or they are highly discriminated against – or even worse, it’s illegal.  It’s important to understand that these places may pose serious risks to LGBTQ travelers, and it’s important to be cautious and research each destination carefully before making travel plans. Below are some popular honeymoon destinations that we suggest that LGBTQ travelers should avoid or be extremely cautious about traveling to.

Jamaica

Jamaica is unfortunately not known for being a welcoming destination for LGBTQ travelers. Homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica and there are very few legal protections for LGBTQ individuals. Openly speaking about one’s sexuality or displaying any kind of PDA with a same-sex partner can lead to harassment, violence, or even arrest. It’s important for LGBTQ travelers to consider their personal safety and we think it may just be best to avoid this destination for a honeymoon.

Egypt

Egypt is another destination that has a poor reputation for being LGBTQ friendly. While homosexuality is technically not illegal in Egypt, it is a conservative Muslim country, and many LGBTQ individuals and couples have been arrested and/or jailed for showing affection in public. Additionally, there have been incidents of violence against LGBTQ individuals. LGBTQ travelers should do thorough research and exercise caution if they still choose to visit Egypt.

Maldives

The Maldives has a mixed reputation for being a gay-friendly destination. Homosexuality is technically illegal in the Maldives and there are no legal protections for LGBTQ individuals. However, many resorts in the Maldives have implemented anti-discrimination policies and may be more welcoming to LGBTQ clientele in recent years. There’s still some gray area here with this destination, so it could still be iffy to travel here. However, if you’re dreaming of an over the water bungalow for your honeymoon, it may be best to pick a more gay friendly destination such as Tahiti instead.

Saint Lucia

The island has been enduring some growing pains recently and some LGBTQ visitors have reported tensions and even violence toward them. It’s unfortunate, because it truly is a stunning island. LGBTQ travelers should be mindful of local attitudes and be aware that public displays of affection may attract unwanted and negative attention. It also should be noted that homosexuality is illegal here and can result in imprisonment. However, there isn’t much evidence that it’s being enforced.

Efforts are being made, especially by gay rights organizations to advocate for the LGBTQ community. St. Lucia is largely a safe destination worth visiting, however, it’s essential for LGBTQ visitors to keep St. Lucia’s laws and culture in mind and avoid in engaging in PDA in public to avoid trouble. It would probably be wise to avoid this location for a honeymoon and find a better suited Caribbean island that is openly gay friendly such as Puerto Rico or Aruba.
