Nostalgic Eats & Treats at Disneyland

When walking through the gates of Disneyland, park guests feel nostalgic. The sights, the smells, and even the sounds. Families laughing, the train at Disneyland Railroad, fresh popcorn, it all just comes together to make the magic. Now, Disneyland is celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the park and has brought back fond memories of The Happiest Place on Earth with nostalgic food options for a limited time. Some of these menu items are inspired by some of Walt Disney’s favorite things, can you guess what they are?

Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park have added a chili item to the menu. The Chili Cheese Corn Dog can be found at Corn Dog Castle in DCA. The infamous corndog is topped with chili, shredded cheddar cheese, and even corn chips! The next item can be found at Disneyland Park is the W.E.D. Chili Cheese Baked Potato which can be purchased at Troubadour Tavern. Did you know that WED is the name of the company Walt founded to help create Disneyland? The company is now known today as the Walt Disney Imagineering.

Keeping on track, did you know there was a Frito Kid and chip “vending machine” located where Rancho del Zocalo now is? Walt Disney sure loved chili and Fritos! The location was called Casa de Fritos in 1955, and now inspires a Fried Tamale Walking Taco and a Mocha Cream Puff. The Fried Tamale Walking Taco is the combination of two dishes from Casa De Fritos, A TA-cup and Frito Chili Pie. This dish is crafted of a beef tamale, smothered in chili, and topped with shredded cheese, corn chips, sour cream, and onions. The Mocha Cream Puff is filled with a mocha-cinnamon cream and topped with chocolate covered corn chips. The sweet and salty go a long way with this treat.

Did you know that in 1962 there were live dancers at what was then known as the Tahitian Terrace in Adventureland? Bengal Barbecue is dishing up flavorful Grilled Tahitian Ribs that are served with white rice and a pineapple slaw, the ribs were served on the original Tahitian Terrace menu.

Before it was the Carnation Cafe, it was the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor. The creamy flavors of Main Street U.S.A. are no longer but the menu is still delectable. A quick throwback to the 1990’s where Beef Stroganoff was the rage at Carnation Cafe. It can be found now at the Carnation Cafe with the delicious flavors of braised beef, bacon, pasta, mushrooms, and onions. In remembrance of the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor, a Banana Split can can found at Gibson Ice Cream Parlor which is close to the original menu item. Speaking of, a new twist on the banana split comes in the form of a churro! The original churro is rolled in cocoa powder and topped with drizzled with a strawberry sauce and banana sauce then dollops of whipped cream, crushed peanuts, and of course a cherry!

Disneyland Park has had many classic restaurants come and go over the years. Captain Hook’s Galley may be one that you do not remember. It opened in August 1955 as Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship and Restaurant, then reinvented to Captain Hook’s Galley in 1969 with a final farewell in 1982. The original menu of Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship and Restaurant offered Tuna Sandwiches on the menu. The return on the sandwich can be found at Red Rose Tavern as the Hook’s Galley Tuna Melt. The fresh tuna salad is topped with Muenster cheese and served with a side of house made chips.

Pancakes have been household staple forever, and even at Disneyland they have been an exciting menu item. Pancake House offered an item called Pancake roll-ups when it opened in 1955, and the culinary team re-crafted them almost identically to what they were. The Apple Pancake Rolls found at River Belle Terrace features apple pie filling, topped with a walnut streusel, and finished off with a cinnamon Chantilly cream.

The nostalgic treats are only the beginning of the 70th Anniversary Celebration happening at Disneyland Resort this year. Characters, entertainment, and so much more is happening at the parks that you do not want to miss.
