Mexico offers so much more than beautiful beaches and all inclusive resorts. Here you can find ziplining, shopping, dining, museums, and amazing historical sites. Plus, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of jungles and cenotes. From ancient ruins to modern adventure, you can experience it all.

Every client that books a trip with us gets a personalized selection of activities that are legit and vetted to enjoy while on their trip. Whether you prefer history, art and culture, or extreme adventure, we can find something that fits your lifestyle.  Next time you decide to go to Mexico, check out these 6 activities you should do while visiting Cancun.

1. Visit the Mayan Ruins

Does a trip to Mexico even count if you don’t see the ruins? This experience takes the top spot of our 6 activities you should do while visiting Cancun. No matter which set of ruins you plan to explore, we know that you will love the experience especially if you take our advice.

Taking the right tour company makes a world of difference when visiting these sites. Sure, anyone can go climb the stairs at Coba, but not everyone knows their history. There is a small family owned tour company called Mayan Routes. If you are looking to book a Mayan ruins experience, they're the company to book with. Even our past clients will agree.

The owner, Jose, is fluent in English, Spanish, and even Mayan for an authentic and educational experience. He can take you to several popular sites throughout the Yucatan, including ChichĂ©n ItzĂ¡, Coba, and Tulum. His tours can also be customized to include a swim in a cenote, buffet lunch, and a visit to a Mayan village.

ChichĂ©n ItzĂ¡

ChichĂ©n ItzĂ¡ is world-renowned for its historical sites and cultural findings. This site is one of the most famous and the main Mayan pyramid is known as El Castillo, or Temple of Kukulcan. ChichĂ©n ItzĂ¡ is also about a two hour drive inward from the coastal cities.

In addition to ancient structures, guests will learn about the different stone carvings, artifacts and the story behind the historic ball game of Pok-A-Tok, which was enjoyed by several local civilizations.

Coba

Coba has the distinction of containing the most Mayan roads, called sacbes. Although there are at least 50 known paths, only 16 are open to the public. Coba is a very large site with a lot of structures and some that are not fully excavated. They do offer bicycle rentals (highly recommended) if you don’t want to walk the entire thing. Ixmoja, the largest pyramid in the area, you are allowed to climb to the top of it. It is quite steep, but the view from the top is amazing!

Tulum

Tulum is a top destination for visitors, thanks to its convenient location and instagram popularity. Not only is Tulum a coastal city, but one with several cenotes nearby. It is also one of the smaller ruins sites so if you don’t have a lot of time, this might be a great option. You can enjoy sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and ancient ruins without going very far.

Tulum is also a unique place to stay if you want a more rustic experience. Please talk to me if you’re thinking about staying in Tulum. It’s not for everyone and it’s best to be educated about the area to make sure it’s the right fit for you.

2. Get Your Adventure on at a Theme Park

When you think of theme parks, you might instantly think of roller coasters and cartoon characters. However, the ones in Mexico are a bit different and highlight the country’s natural beauty. Here, you won’t find roller coasters, but you will find adventures in unique places such as underground lakes and caverns.

Xcaret Park is a very popular destination in the area. They boast an impressive 50 cultural and natural attractions to explore. They also have a fantastic resort here that includes access to the park with your booking. If you want to be close to the action, this might be a great option for you.

Xplor, which is near Xcaret, also gives guests a wide range of activities to enjoy. Be sure to check out amphibious vehicle rides and stalactite swimming for truly unique experiences. Xel-HĂ¡ Park is another favorite, and a little less intense, but still a great experience. Skip another indoor aquarium, and snorkel amongst dolphins, stingrays and other sea creatures.

All of these parks offer all inclusive packages where your food and drinks are included with your entry ticket. Most clients spend all day at one of these parks because there is so much to do and see. If any of these parks interest you please let us know because we can include these with your booking.

3. Swim in a Cenote

Even if you’ve never heard the word “cenote,” before you’ve likely seen them on TV. These deep cavernous pools are alluring, especially for those seeking a unique experience. It’s strongly encouraged to explore these natural attractions with a knowledgeable tour guide. Not only are most cenotes highly remote, but they can be risky to dive into alone.

Scheduling a trip with Casa Tortuga is a wise idea, as they tour you through four different types of cenotes. Jose with Mayan Routes can also include a cenote visit into your day with him where you can cool off after exploring the ruins. Be sure to discover these natural attractions on your next vacation to Mexico and be sure to bring your waterproof case for your phone for pictures.

4. Learn About Art or History at a Museum

Mexico has civilizations that date back to 1500 BC. That means that the country has a lot of history to share with the world. If you are a person who loves history and art, this area of Mexico is definitely for you. The Maya Museum of Cancun contains some of the most detailed collections of artifacts in the area. Here, you can learn about the history surrounding the Yucatan state of Quintana Roo.

The Frida Kahlo Museum, or the Blue House, is also a unique place to see. The artist herself, and Diego Rivera, called the building their home for many years.

Finally, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art is a one-of-a-kind experience. Here, visitors snorkel, dive, and use glass-bottom boats to discover the many sculptures and artwork below the water.

5. Go Shopping in Playa del Carmen

If all the wilderness and exploring is making you miss shopping, you’re in luck. Head to Playa del Carmen and go to 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida). This area is famous for its unique and modern stores, restaurants, and bars. With its contemporary feel, you’ll see people gathering here more than anywhere else. The good news is that the street is blocked off to traffic so it’s very walkable and easy to get to when you stay at a nearby hotel or resort.

After you buy a new swimsuit head towards the beach in Playa del Carmen. Between Calle 1 Sur and Juarez Avenue there is Parque Fundadores. Here you will find a beautiful statue, a kids play area, handicap beach access, as well as Mayan and Papantla dancers performing throughout the day and night. Playa del Carmen is fun and exciting anytime of the day or night.

6. Explore Ecopark Kantun-Chi

Choosing the right activities can feel impossible when you want to experience it all. That is why Ecopark Kantun-Chi is a must-see destination for outdoor enthusiasts. This park features five cenotes and an underground river. The caverns below boast rock growths, including stalagmites and helictites.

Guided tours take you through Xibalba, or the Mayan’s underworld, similar to Hades. Or you can stay above ground to swim in cenotes and hike the trails. As you can imagine, Kantun-Chi is also a popular destination for weddings. No matter the occasion of your vacation, this spectacular location is a must see.
