Many travelers have only recently discovered the beauty and uniqueness of Tulum, Mexico. Located about 2 hours south of Cancun, Tulum is a small town with a boho-chic and beachy style. It’s becoming a more popular destination thanks to instagram influencers. What was once a sleepy little town has now become a popular place for celebrities, hippies, and spiritual types.
Tulum offers a much different experience than what most people are used to when they travel to the Yucatan side of Mexico. Before you plan a trip to Tulum, it’s important for you to understand what it is, and what it isn’t. Sure, those instagram photos are amazing, but actually being there and staying in Tulum might not be your cup of tea. Read on to learn why Tulum, Mexico, is such a different experience.
What is the Vibe in Tulum?
The overall vibe in Tulum is best suited for relaxed and go with the flow type of people. Tulum is known for having a spiritual or health focus, with yoga classes, cooking classes, art, and plenty of beach lounging. It’s a great place for solo travelers to go and make friends or for a unique place for a group of friends to gather, or for a honeymoon or couple’s getaway.
Many also do not realize that most of Tulum is run on generators. It’s literally off the grid. Some hotels in Tulum do not offer Wi-Fi or even AC during the day, so if that’s a must for you, it’s best to check into that before you book. Plus, because of the draw of celebrities and instagram influencers, staying in Tulum can also have a hefty price tag.
However, don’t think that it’s all quiet and chill the entire time. There are a lot of nightclubs that get very lively and loud into the night. Many hotels have a lot of nightlife with different music genres you can choose from. If you want to be a beach bum during the day and party at night, Tulum is a great option for you.
Beach Tulum or Tulum Town?
Tulum has two main areas. “Beach Tulum” and “Tulum Town”.
It goes without saying that staying at the beach is going to be more expensive than staying in town. The beach is where most of the trendy restaurants are and where most of the nightlife is. Also note that while the beach is technically public, each resort carves up their portion of the beach, so you have to be a guest in order to access it.
Many of the beach hotels have beach clubs that you can pay a fee to enjoy during the day. This gives you access to their pools and beach. Each one offers something different, so it’s best to look into what suits your needs best.
