How to Choose a Resort That Fits YOU

If you’ve ever been planning a vacation and are struggling with how to choose a resort, and you find yourself knee-deep in glossy photos, star ratings, and conflicting opinions… you’re not alone. These days, choosing the right resort can feel a bit being on the show Let’s Make a Deal! Everything looks exciting, but one wrong choice could lead to a resort you’re not happy with. So how do you choose a resort that truly fits you best? That’s where we come in to help. The truth is simple but often overlooked: not every resort is right for every traveler. What feels like heaven to one person might feel like a disappointment to another. In this blog we’re pulling back the curtain on what really matters when choosing a resort, what doesn’t, and how to cut through the online noise so you aren’t led astray.

Why Photos Don’t Tell the Whole Story

Let’s start with the photos. Those seductive sirens of the travel world. We’ve all seen them: the perfectly lit rooms, the sparkling pools with exactly one person mysteriously floating in the background, the beach that looks suspiciously empty for 11 a.m. on a Saturday. Resort photography is an art form, and the artists behind it are very good at what they do.

Wide-angle lenses make everything look bigger. Strategic cropping keeps any less-polished areas conveniently out of frame. And sometimes those photos were taken fifteen years (and a few thousand guests) ago. They’re great for giving a vibe, but not always great at showing what the resort really looks like today, or what kind of condition it’s actually in. And all this doesn’t help you figure out how to choose a resort.

This is one of the biggest ways I help clients when we’re narrowing down options. I know what details to look for, what resorts have misleading (and old) photos, and how to translate glossy imagery into real-life expectations so you’re not surprised when you arrive. Plus, I travel and tour a lot of resorts every year so I have up to date first hand experience to know if what you see online is telling another story or not.

Why Star Ratings Aren’t as Helpful as You Think

Star ratings seem like they should be reliable, right? Five stars should mean exceptional, three stars should mean average, and four stars should mean pretty nice for the price. If only it were that simple.

Star ratings vary wildly depending on the country and the criteria being used. Some systems reward amenities – things like gyms, conference rooms, or multiple pools, while others reward ratings for service quality and food. Others allow resorts to self-report. A five-star resort in one destination might feel more like a three and a half star somewhere else simply because standards differ.

So when someone proudly announces, “It’s a five-star resort!” a smart traveler quietly wonders, “Says who?” Star ratings are part of the picture, but they shouldn’t be the whole picture or the only thing you use to decide. This is an area where having an experienced travel advisor makes a world of difference when you’re trying to figure out how to choose a resort for your trip. I help clients understand what the experience is actually like, because a star rating never tells you how warm the staff is, how good the food tastes, or how a place truly feels.

Instagram Luxury vs. Real Luxury

Here’s where things get interesting. Not all “luxury” is created equal. There’s “Instagram luxury,” which is flashy, curated, and made for the camera. Think overly staged pool cocktails, floating taco bars, designer swings, and photo-op corners you’ve seen reposted a thousand times. It looks impressive, but it doesn’t necessarily translate to a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Then there’s real luxury. The lasting kind of experience that isn’t just about photographs. It’s the service that feels thoughtful, not performative. The food that’s cooked with care. The clean, comfortable rooms that make you breathe out the moment you walk in. The spaces designed for peace, not posing.

When clients come to me with a resort that looks amazing online, this is one of the first things we talk through. I help you identify whether a property offers the kind of high-touch, quality-driven luxury you want, or whether it’s more of a “great for photos, less great for comfort” type of experience.

Different Travel Styles Need Different Resorts

This is where most people pick wrong. The best resort for YOU depends entirely on your travel style. And that’s where so many people get tripped up. A resort can be absolutely wonderful and still be the wrong match for someone simply because their travel preferences don’t align with the vibe of the property.

Some people thrive in lively, bustling environments with music by the pool, lots of entertainment, and a wide mix of guests. Others want a peaceful, serene atmosphere with soft music, great food, and quiet corners to relax. Some travelers care deeply about the beach, while others won’t touch sand and live for the pool scene. Some want walkability and compact layouts; others love sprawling resorts with tons of options.

There’s no right or wrong preference, it’s all about different styles and which one is yours. And this is where I can help. When I learn about your ideal vacation style and whether you want relaxation, adventure, foodie experiences, family fun, or romance, etc. I can help you filter out resorts that look lovely online but wouldn’t be a true fit for you.

What Really Matters: How to Choose a Resort That Fits YOU

With all the distractions of ratings, photos, trends, and plenty of opinions (no shortage of those!) it’s easy to forget the most important thing – Your needs. Understanding what you value on vacation is the secret to choosing the right resort every single time.

Ask yourself what matters most:

  • Food quality or convenience?
  • A wide sandy beach or multiple pools?
  • Quiet and calm or lively and social?
  • Walkable grounds or lots of options spread out?
  • Upgraded rooms or spending more on experiences?
Once you know what you want your vacation to feel like, everything becomes clearer. Not everything is obvious from a website or brochure, and not all resorts excel in the same areas. This is where personalized travel planning really shines. When you tell me what you want your days to look like, I can match you with resorts that align with those priorities, not just the ones that look good online.

The Bottom Line: The Perfect Resort Is Personal

The truth about learning how to choose a resort is that it has far less to do with stars, photos, or popularity, and far more to do with understanding what kind of traveler you are. When you choose based on what truly matters to YOU, instead of what your cousin’s, uncle’s, friend recommended because they loved it, you end up with a resort that feels comfortable, and exactly what you were envisioning. Because the perfect resort isn’t universal. It’s personal.

After all, the perfect resort isn’t the one with the loudest hype or the trendiest aesthetic. It’s the one where you feel like you can relax a little deeper, smile a little easier, and enjoy your time exactly the way you like it. And the best part? You don’t have to navigate that alone.

Thinking about booking a trip and you’re overwhelmed with how to choose a resort that fits YOU? Reach out. We’d love to help you!
